TW finishes 4th in CFRL IndyCar Championship opener
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Watkins Motorsports Group got off to a great start in the first round of the CFRL IndyCar Championship on Tuesday night with Tanner Watkins leading the team's efforts while John was on leave.
Racing at the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the new series made it's maiden start on the track's road course configuration for 61 laps of white knuckle action. TW qualified 7th for the event with a lap time of 1 minute, 15.913 seconds (119.031 MPH) and started the race 5th on the grid when the 3rd place car did not make the start due to a mechanical failure.
In a heavy battle with Ray Kingsbury all race, TW slotted into 5th place for much of the event. A strong sequence of laps between laps 40-47 had the #3 Avery Huffman Defeat DIPG Chevrolet running all the way up to 3rd place before a round of pit stops dropped us back to 4th.
A couple of late race cautions made things interesting, including an accident on the second-to-last lap that saw the Kingsbury brothers collide and Tanner drive under a flipping car, securing a 4th place finish while the race ended under caution.
All in all, a great start to this first season of the CFRL IndyCar Championship for WMG. Tanner currently sits 4th in points and John is set to make his league debut at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California next Tuesday to get both WMG cars in the field. If the league does not have a broadcast partner for next week's race, WMG will once again provide an in-car camera for friends and family to watch the race from the perspective of Tanner's #3 race car.
We will update this story with links to league standings and the full in-car video of tonight's race when those items are ready. Thank you for the support this evening and join us again next Tuesday, July 18th at 8 PM Central time for round two of the CFRL IndyCar Championship from Auto Club Speedway.
